Ground rules

(as amended in 2019)

The Andrew Murray Prize Fund (hereafter referred to as the Fund) seeks to promote excellence in Christian media and music by awarding high quality work in Afrikaans and other languages ​​of South Africa, and awarding awards to deserving persons and institutions.

1) The Prices

1.1 The Andrew Murray Prize for General Christian Books in Afrikaans is awarded as far as possible bi-annually to the author or authors of the best Christian book published in the preceding period (see 4.5). All original Afrikaans Christian books except for scholarly theological works (see 1.2) are eligible for this prize. The prize may consist of a gold coin, a certificate and a cash amount.

1.2 The Andrew Murray Prize for Theological Books in Afrikaans is awarded as far as possible bi-annually to the author or authors of the best scientific theological book in Afrikaans that appeared in the preceding period (see 4.5). The prize may consist of a gold coin, a certificate and a cash amount.

1.3 The Andrew Murray-Desmond Tutu Prize for General Christian Books is awarded as far as possible bi-annually to the author or authors of the best Christian book which appeared in an official language of South Africa with the exception of Afrikaans, in the preceding period (see 4.5), except scientific theological books (see 1.4). If the winning book is written by a single author, he / she must be a citizen of South Africa or Namibia (dual citizenship is in order). If more than one author is involved in the book, South African citizens must have had a substantial share in the writing of the book. The prize may consist of a trophy, a certificate and a cash amount.

1.4 The Andrew Murray-Desmond Tutu Prize for Theological Books is awarded as far as possible bi-annually to the author or authors of the best scientific theological book published in an official language of South Africa with the exception of Afrikaans, in the preceding period (see 4.5). If the winning book is written by a single author, he / she must be a citizen of South Africa or Namibia (dual citizenship is in order). If more than one author is involved in the book, South African citizens must have had a substantial share in the writing of the book. The prize may consist of a trophy, a certificate and a cash amount.

1.5 The Desmond Tutu-Gerrit Brand Prize for Emerging Writers is awarded as far as possible annually to an emerging / debut writer (s) in the Christian media in an official language of South Africa. If the winning book is written by a single author, he / she must be a citizen of South Africa or Namibia (dual citizenship is in order). If more than one author is involved in the book, South African citizens must have had a substantial share in the writing of the book. The prize may consist of a certificate and a cash amount.

2) The Awards

2.1 The Andrew Murray FAK Award for the Advancement of Christian Music is awarded as far as possible annually from funds made available by the Federasie van Akrikaanse Kultuurverenigings (the FAK) to a person or persons who in a special way contribute or contributed to the field of Christian music.

2.2 The Jaap du Rand-Denise Ackermann Award for Unity, Justice and Reconciliation is awarded as far as possible annually to a person or persons who in a special way contribute or contributed to unity, justice and reconciliation as it amongst other finds expression in the Confession of Belhar.

2.3 The CLF-Elise Tempelhoff Award for Environmental Conservation is awarded as far as possible annually from funds made available by the Christian Literature Fund (CLF) to a person or persons who in a special way contribute or contributed to environmental conservation/ the ecology.

2.4 A special Andrew Murray or Andrew Murray-Desmond Tutu Award can, if and when the EC (see 4) so ​​decides, be awarded to a person / persons or institutions making an extraordinary contribution to any form of Christian media in an official language of South Africa. The award may consist of a certificate and a cash amount.

3) Members of the Fund

3.1 The members of the Fund shall consist of one representative from each of the institutions or persons who in an agreed manner donates to the Fund and have chosen to be a member of the Fund.

3.2 In the event that a member resigns or for whatever reason ceases to be a representative of any of the institutions mentioned above, such institution may nominate another representative as a member and notify the EC (see 4) accordingly. set.

3.3 The members of the Fund shall meet as Members’ Meeting at least once a year. The Members’ Meeting may also do its work by correspondence.

3.4 The Members’ Meeting shall elect a chairperson and vice-chairperson every three years, elect the members of the EC (see 4), discuss and make decisions on matters of interest to the Fund, including financial matters and statements, and may consider matters for consideration and / or checkout refers to the EC.

3.5 A quorum of the Members’ Meeting is formed by the presence of at least forty presents (40%) of the members in person or by proxy. In the event of a tie, the chairperson shall have a casting vote.

3.6 The members of the Fund have legal personality and the chairperson may, on behalf of and with the approval of the Members’ Meeting, appear in any court in the Republic of South Africa.

4) The Executive Council (EC)

4.1 The UR consists of seven (7) members, including the chairperson and vice-chairperson, and is elected by the Members’ Meeting with terms that vary so that at least two (2) members retire each year (which may be eligible for re-election).

4.2 The chairperson and vice-chairperson of the Members’ Meeting are also the chairperson and vice-chairperson of the EC with terms of three years each (see 3.4).

4.3 The EC ensures that the Fund is managed in accordance with the Basic Rules, decides which prizes will be awarded, approves the winners’ prizes and awards and their value, in accordance with par 4.9 and 4.10, and considers any other relevant matter presented by the members of the Fund or by the Members’ Meeting. The EC decides on ways in which the Fund can be financially strengthened, decides on investments, approves expenses, annually submits audited financial statements to the Members’ Meeting, and meets as often as necessary. Minutes of meetings of the EC are regularly sent to all members of the Fund for their notice.   

4.4 The EC decides which persons and / or institution (s) are responsible for the administration of the Fund and report on it to the Members’ Meeting.

4.5 The EC annually approaches media institutions to enter high-quality products for the prizes that have come to light in the preceding period – the length that the EC repeatedly decides. 

4.6 The EC may decide that products not so entered should be considered for the prices.

4.7 A product may, where applicable, be considered for awarding more than once with the approval of the EC.

4.8 The EC appoints knowledgeable persons to independently judge the entries for the various prizes and to serve the EC with motivated recommendations.

4.9 In view of the recommendations, the EC decides which products should be awarded. Members are given the opportunity to comment on this decision(s) as circulated.

4.10 In the case of awards, the EC requests nominations from members and decides on them after consulting experts and with notification to members.

4.11 An appropriate honorarium, as approved by the EC, may be made to judges.

4.12 A quorum of the EC is formed by the presence of five (5) members. In the event of a tie, the chairperson shall have a casting vote. Voting by proxy is allowed. The EC can also do its work by correspondence or teleconferencing. 

5) Amendment 

5.1 These Basic Rules may be amended by members of the Fund after prior notice of at least twenty (21) days and by a two-thirds majority.

6) Dissolution 

6.1 If a two-thirds majority of the members of the Fund so decide, the Fund will be dissolved.

6.2 In the event of such dissolution, the Fund’s investments will be called up, essential expenses will be paid from the funds, and the balance will be transferred to an institution that will best serve the objectives of the Fund.
